The meniscus is a fibrocartilage that plays a shock-absorbing role in knee mechanics. In the event of trauma, the meniscus can be damaged. This damage can lead to the formation of an unstable meniscus tongue, which can jam permanently or occasionally, causing the knee to lock. In this case, there is an indication for surgical treatment to repair the meniscus or regularise the lesion. This operation is carried out under arthroscopy (video assistance) on an outpatient basis.
In the event of repair, after the operation, the patient must take a month's rest and walk between 2 walking sticks. Sport is resumed after 3 months. In the event of regularisation, full weight-bearing is authorised and the patient walks between 2 canes for a few days. Sport is resumed after 2 months. Re-education is started 2 weeks after the operation to optimise recovery and return to sport.
Not all injuries require surgery. A distinction must be made between traumatic injuries such as meniscal fractures and degenerative wear-and-tear injuries.
These are the first signs of osteoarthritis of the knee. They are treated with corticosteroid infiltration and rehabilitation.
These are often responsible for mechanical blockages, leading to arthroscopic surgical treatment as described above.
