DIGESTIVE ENDOSCOPY

The operating theatre at Clinique Paris Lilas is equipped with an examination room reserved exclusively for digestive endoscopy and an adjoining sterilisation room.

WHAT IS DIGESTIVE ENDOSCOPY?

The techniques developed at Clinique Paris Lilas allow minimally invasive diagnostic or therapeutic exploration of the entire digestive system (duodenum, stomach, colon, rectum, etc.).

The endoscope is a small-diameter flexible tube fitted with an optical fibre for illuminating, visualising and photographing the inside of hollow organs. An "operator" channel allows equipment such as forceps to be used to perform biopsies (diagnostic endoscopy) and/or interventions (interventional endoscopy).
The intervention consists of introducing the endoscope via a natural route (upper (fibroscopy) or lower (colonoscopy)). The images are transmitted to a screen and can be stored and edited.

THE DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES

Oesophagus, stomach, duodenum and small intestine :
Upper endoscopy
Used to explore the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.
Lower endoscopy or colonoscopy
Used for diagnosis, sampling (biopsy) and local treatment of polyps and small tumours by mucosectomy.

HYGIENE AND SAFETY

The department is equipped with video endoscopes that transmit high-quality images of internal organs in real time. Between two sessions, the equipment undergoes machine disinfection in accordance with the recommendations of the "guide to good disinfection practice for medical devices" (DGS/DHOS, CTIN / November 2003).

Endoscopes are disinfected by :

  • manual pre-treatment of the device, including leak tests,
  • manual cleaning with swabbing of the channels,
  • disinfection in a cold machine
  • an automatic timer and recording system to ensure compliance with standards for complete sterilisation of the equipment.

The use of single-use equipment for all small items completes the system.
To ensure optimum endoscope hygiene safety, the clinic has also introduced a disinfection quality control plan, with regular microbiological sampling carried out by an external laboratory that has been COFRAC-certified since 2001.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

The details of how the procedure will be carried out are defined during your interview with the doctor performing the procedure and with your anaesthetist. Patients are systematically given documents explaining the different procedures and their potential risks.

An endoscopy may be performed under general or local anaesthetic, depending on the nature of the procedure and your personal characteristics (age, BMI, history, personal choices).
For colonoscopies, your doctor will prescribe a residue-free diet and a treatment to follow before the examination (lavage solution) in order to prepare your intestine before the procedure. It is important that you strictly follow the rules laid down by your doctor in order to optimise the results of the examination and avoid having to repeat the examination if the colon is not clean enough to be viewed completely.

In accordance with the instructions of the public authorities' health bodies and the Clinic's policy of favouring outpatient hospitalisation, you will generally be offered an outpatient procedure (a stay of less than 24 hours) to enable you to return home quickly and avoid unnecessary hospitalisation.
The reports of your examinations will be given to you by the gastroenterologists who carried them out. Your GP will also be informed of the results.
