The CT image is obtained using the same fundamental contrasts as conventional radiology. However, the way in which the images are acquired is extremely different: a beam of X-rays and a ring of detectors revolve around the patient's body and record a series of histograms corresponding to the attenuation profiles of the tissues in the section being examined according to several projections.
After acquisition, the scanned images are processed to obtain sections in different anatomical planes and also reconstructions called three-dimensional because they give a relief image.

On average, one scan corresponds to 5 years of natural irradiation.
Scanner image acquisition is very fast. In visceral pathology and during a brain scan, an iodinated contrast agent is often injected intravenously. The technician places a catheter in a vein in the arm and then uses an injector to inject the contrast product at a continuous rate. This injection may sometimes cause a temporary sensation of heat. In very rare cases, the contrast product may cause an allergic reaction.
The main indications for CT scans are
A plain CT scan is indicated to look for fractures not seen on plain X-rays or in the assessment of a bone tumour.
A plain CT scan is indicated to look for fractures not seen on plain X-rays or in the assessment of a bone tumour.
An iodinated contrast medium is injected into a joint prior to the scan in order to analyse the bone structures, cartilage, menisci in the knee, ligaments in the ankle or wrist, rotator cuff tendons or glenoid bulge, or to look for inter-articular foreign bodies.
The contrast product is injected by the radiologist in the x-ray room and the scan is performed immediately afterwards. When injected by experienced radiologists, the procedure is painless and very quick. The patient is only injected once. Allergic patients are pre-medicated (antihistamine treatment three days before the arthrography).
It should be noted that in most cases, a simple ligamentoplasty staple does not prevent MRI from being performed.
