Radiography is obtained by attenuating a beam of X-rays which passes through the various tissues. This attenuation depends on the thickness of the tissue passed through and also on the composition of the tissue. For example, bone, which is a very dense structure, is white, while the air in the lungs is black.
"Plain radiography remains the first-line examination for pathologies of the ankle and forefoot. It must be carried out using state-of-the-art equipment and by an experienced radiologist.

Plain X-rays are always useful to perform a debulking work-up in order, for example, to rule out a bone lesion (an exostosis can give the impression of a soft tissue tumour), to look for calcifications or ossifications (parasitosis, calcified haematoma, soft tissue tumour) or to show an X-ray image suggestive of a lipoma.
